Pale Blue Dot Project Week Two: Communication design

Week Two

During week two we learnt about graphic design, or communication design, something I'm considering studying more. In my mind communication design is telling a story or statement though graphic design. Graphic design typically used for band logos, printed commercials and art. I prefer to do graphic design on the computer, mostly on Adobe Illustrator.

The two visual elements I studied this week was lines and colours, both prime in ingredients in graphic design. Lines are the back bones of any drawing. They help convey emotion, motion and features. When multiple lines come together they advance to a completed drawing. Colour is made up of multiply lights. The effects of colour are made up of three different elements: hue, value and intensity. Hue is the selection of colour. Value is the contrast between light and darkness. The intensity is how bright the colours are.

The design

My original idea was that there would be two circles, both would represent Earth. The first circle would show our planet from B.C, full of colour and untouched by man. The second would show the same Earth in A.D, with a more cloudy colour. Around the circle there will be many types of architecture covering the outer line of the circle. Underneath both of the Earths there will be the line: Earth: Building our future together as if it was being constructed. What I ended up doing was a crane that spelt Earth, building the same saying with toy building blocks. Although that was not the original idea it has the idea that a child is building the future.

I will hope to continue improve my graphic design in the future.
